A Practical Way to Care for Yourself During Seasons of Stress

The Joyful Life Magazine

Issue 11 | REST | Summer 2021

“The next time you feel overwhelmed, sit in stillness with the Lord, and with the Holy Spirit’s help, listen to your body’s response when you ask this question, ‘What do I need today?’

Am I disconnected from the Lord?
Make space for reading the Word or prayer.
Am I physically drained?
Carve out time for a nap or early bedtime.
Am I jittery with a high heart rate?
Try a Christian yoga flow.
Am I craving connection?
Reach out to a friend and plan a get together.

This practice is simple yet powerful because it challenges us to listen with deeper intentionality to what our bodies and souls are craving. When we do this, not only do we embrace the great freedom we have to find rest as we ask the Lord to direct our steps, we also give ourselves the opportunity to explore how to activate the beautiful system God created to help us.”

What are Thin Places and how do They Help us Experience God?
Grit & Virtue

March 10, 2021

In the same way tension feels tangible, as if you could cut through it with a knife, the Lord’s presence pierced through the air as grandpa took his last breath. In this excruciating yet delicate moment, His peace in our pain was so palpable it felt like if we simply looked up, we might peer through an opening in the atmosphere and see Jesus sitting on the throne.

This is what ancient Celts refer to as a “thin place.” A place, or a moment, where the distance between heaven and earth feels minuscule; a mere breath apart.

It may be easier to recognize thin place moments in monumental events like weddings, deaths, the birth of a child, or an epic array of the Lord’s creation, but I wonder – what if the Spirit of God drenches every breath, heartbeat, and conversation much more than we take note of?

How to Navigate Life After Lockdown When You Have Anxiety
The Kindred Voice

November 17, 2020

As an anxiety sufferer, this season has been a rollercoaster. First came the throat tickle panic, then the fear of dying alone, then exhausting conversations about how to operate in this time, and then stay at home orders. Just when I thought I’d moved past one fear, a surprise drop sent me reeling and my stomach was back in my throat. Another twist, another turn, another unknown, and all I can do is hang on for dear life and wait for the wicked ride to end.

Will it ever end?

As I dip my toes into this next season of unknowns, one thing I’ve realized is that as an anxiety sufferer I must be intentional about making choices that help me find peace.

“Waiting Out the Storm”
She Leads Daily

January 2020

I wish that we could go through our struggles like a time-lapse video. Instead of feeling the pain, tasting the anguish, and straining to see the purpose of what we’re going through in the agonizingly slow pace of real time, it would be a sped up version. In a few short moments, maybe even seconds, we’d greet the struggle, endure it, send it on its way and be able to witness the growth that came out of it. This would be instant gratification at its finest. However, much to my dismay, this is not our reality.

Enduring moments like the anxiety attack I experienced, where we are unable to imagine how any possible goodness could come out of our struggle, it can be difficult to embrace the truth we know about our Heavenly Father. We know that God is true to His character. We know He never changes, He never fails, that He loves us abundantly, and that even if our situation is dire, He is still good. But I’ve discovered that if we want to truly embrace these truths, even in the heavy moments, we have to learn to be expectant.

“5 Ways to Support a Friend with Anxiety”
The Kindred Voice

December 11, 2019

In a culture where anxiety is an unspoken epidemic, anxiety sufferers, like myself, are often left craving support from their friends and loved ones.

It’s an unfortunate fall-out that I don’t believe is intentional. Rather, it is birthed from a plethora of reasons like confusion on how to approach the subject, fear of saying the wrong thing, lack of personal experience thus lack of understanding, or simply the missing piece of empathy.

Whatever the reason might be, my hope is that by sharing five simple ways to support a friend with anxiety, I might help demystify the subject and shed light on how easy it can be to provide encouragement.

“She is significant, With or Without Child”
Grit & Virtue

June 19, 2019

Wrestling with this counter-cultural question, I’ve been tempted to believe that my role in this world doesn’t matter as much because I’m not currently taking on the job of mama. But as I’ve spent time asking the Lord what He has in store for our lives, I’ve learned to believe the truth that I do not have to be a mom to be significant.

Nowhere in scripture does it say that women must have children. Nowhere does it say that if you have kids, then God will love you more. Kids or no kids, we are significant. Our Creator loves us no matter what.

"Commended for Faith - Not an Outcome"
JenniferEdewaard.com

August 29, 2018

Have you ever stopped to consider that you may never achieve the one thing that you’re working towards? Or that maybe you’ll be stuck trying long after you expected to be reaping the rewards?

When it comes down to it, our ultimate goal as followers of Jesus is to be faithful no matter what. If we become so focused on what we produce, on what goals we are accomplishing (or not accomplishing) in our lifetime, we not only rob ourselves the joy of enjoying the process, but we run the risk of losing sight of our purpose; to make Jesus' name known.

"Unexpected Guests"
(in)courage

May 16, 2018

"It’s easy to be hospitable when we’re prepared for it, but Jesus doesn’t command us to love one another when it’s suitable for us; He says to love one another. Period.

Sometimes hospitality looks like a beautifully planned dinner party, but I’m discovering that it can simply look like a sweet little sign on the guest bedroom door welcoming unexpected guests."

"Shifting our Focus"
Milk & Honey Magazine

March 25, 2018

When we’re struggling, it’s so easy to be fixated on our trouble – the lost job, the broken friendship, the pain of singleness, anxiety, or the strained marriage– and lose sight of the good that lies in front of us. In John 16:33, Jesus says, “In this world you will have trouble…” There’s no if about it – there will be trouble. But that’s not the end of the statement.

Jesus continues on to say, “But take heart! I have overcome the world.” With Christ, we have the assurance that although there will still be trouble in this world, there is also hope knowing that He has overcome all of it. Knowing this, we have a choice in how we can respond in light of trouble. We can live with our vision so convoluted by our struggle that all we see is pain OR we can use our struggle as the lens through which we focus on the goodness of our Savior.

"How to Operate out of Abundance"
Grit & Virtue

November 1, 2017

"The Lord does not give to us as the world gives because He gives 100% without restraint. There’s no level of “if you do this, then you’ll get this.” He doesn’t dose out his goodness at random intervals depending on where we are or what we’ve done. He blesses us in all things, at all times, not as the world dictates. With Him there is no such thing as sparingly; He is all about abundance."

"Far from Completion"
Whilst Magazine- Issue .06

October 23, 2017

"Seeing the beauty of this finished project was so encouraging for my soul because it was a tangible, visible example that hiccups, breaks, or delays in execution will not affect the outcome; all the hard work will lead to completion .

Philippians 1:6 says, “He who began a good work in you will carry it to completion until the day of Jesus Christ.” It doesn’t say, “He who began a good work m ight carry it to completion,” or, “He will start a good work;” the scripture says he WILL carry it to completion."

"The Friend who Exceeds Expectations"
(in)courage

February 24, 2017

"Last summer I was a sad song stuck on repeat. Wrought with loneliness, over and over again I cried out to God asking, "Where are my deep friendships?" Absorbed by my longing for perfect depth, discontent descended like a fog over my relationships. I was so consumed with what was missing that I failed to recognize that our heavenly Father is the friend who exceeds expectations."

But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.”
(Luke 2:10-11)

"Like a thick fog, destruction seems to have overtaken our world. From the attacks in Paris, to threats against the US, a desperate need for hope and true joy is imperative. Much more than a re-telling of the Christmas story, that’s what this passage provides – truth that none of the darkness in this world can overtake us, for Jesus, the great joy, the savior of the world has overcome."
